Cheryl Colman - Senior Crisis Worker
“As a crisis worker it is my job to support you throughout your time at the Garden Suite (forensic Medical facility); whilst making sure you are treated with dignity and respect, by all who come into contact with you.
When you arrive at the suite I will introduce myself and explain my role. I work for Twelves Company and not the police; so I am here to support you throughout and ensure that your needs are met and that they are treated with the utmost respect.
I will then explain the procedure, including the examination. I will make sure that you understand and agree with what is going to happen. We agree, with a wink or a nod, that you will let me know if you have changed your mind or want to stop at any time. I make sure that you are always in control of the situation and nothing is done without your consent.
Depending on how long ago the offence took place, I may need to use an Early Evidence Kit (EEK). This contains items needed for taking a urine sample, mouth swab and a mouth rinse. None of these samples hurt in any way and again, you have a right to refuse if you wish. You are usually in control of taking the swabs yourself, with a little bit of guidance from me.
I am also aware of your feelings and emotions and understand how each person copes with trauma in a different way. Don’t worry if you keep crying, shaking or losing concentration. Don’t worry if you feel numb, shocked or distant from the incident – all of these feeling are completely natural. It doesn’t matter how you present yourself – what matters is that you know that it wasn’t your fault and that I will never judge you.
When you feel ready I will show you the examination room and explain the process and who is involved. If you want to proceed I can stay and hold your hand or I can assist the doctor, behind a screen, with the handling of samples. Every effort is taken to make sure your dignity is upheld at all times – and remember – you can stop it at any time.
After the examination, I will show you the shower room where you can wash and dress in private. We have toiletries and clothes available for you to use.
Before you leave the Garden Suite, I may discuss emergency contraception (which can be given by the doctor) and future appointments for the GU clinic. I may also give you some literature to take away and read.
Though it is unlikely, once I have arranged transport for you to go home, that I will see you again, the support from Twelves Company does not end. If you agree, I can make a referral to our Case Manager who will contact you within the next 24-48 hours. She is a friendly, understanding and approachable lady who will talk to you about your choices. There are lots of highly skilled professionals who can help you at Twelves Company, but the Case Manager will discuss each role and help you to decide which type of support is most suitable for you.
You never have to cope with this alone.”
